How a period delay consultation works
The pharmacist will ask when your next period is expected, how regular your cycle is, whether pregnancy is possible, and why you would like to delay bleeding. They will also review your medical history and current medicines.
If a medicine is appropriate, the pharmacist will explain when to start it, how to take it, possible side effects and when bleeding is expected to return. Do not take medicine prescribed for somebody else.
Important suitability checks
Period delay treatment is not suitable for everyone. The assessment may cover:
- Pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy
- Previous blood clots, heart problems or stroke
- Liver problems, migraine and unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Current medicines and hormone treatments
- Your usual menstrual cycle and the date your next period is expected
Period delay is not contraception
Medicine used specifically to delay a period does not necessarily prevent pregnancy. Continue to use appropriate contraception and follow the pharmacist’s advice.
Spotting or breakthrough bleeding can still happen. The pharmacist can explain what to expect and what to do if your period does not return after treatment.
