Why have your blood pressure checked?
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. Persistently high blood pressure can raise the risk of heart disease, stroke and other health problems, but it usually causes no symptoms. Measuring it is the only way to know whether it may be high.
A check is particularly useful if you are aged 40 or over or have factors that increase cardiovascular risk. A single reading does not always diagnose high blood pressure; further readings may be needed.
Who can receive a free NHS pharmacy check?
The national NHS pharmacy service is generally available to adults aged 40 or over in England who have not already been diagnosed with high blood pressure and have not had a professional blood pressure check in the previous six months. GP practices can also refer eligible people for a clinic reading or ambulatory monitoring.
The pharmacy team will confirm your eligibility. If you are outside the NHS criteria, ask whether another suitable check is available before attending.
What happens during the test?
You will sit with your arm supported while an inflatable cuff is placed around your upper arm. The cuff tightens for a few seconds and the device records two numbers: systolic pressure when the heart pumps, and diastolic pressure when the heart relaxes.
The measurement may be repeated. Depending on the result, the pharmacy may give healthy-living advice, offer a monitor to wear or use at home, or recommend GP follow-up. Very high or very low readings may need urgent assessment.
Understanding your reading
The NHS generally considers a clinic reading high at 140/90 mmHg or above, and a home reading high at 135/85 mmHg or above. Your individual target may differ because of age, pregnancy, medicines or other conditions, so do not change treatment based only on a website or one reading.
Bring details of prescribed medicines and tell the pharmacy team if you feel unwell, are pregnant or already receive care for blood pressure.
