STI Test Kits in Leeds: A Guide to Testing

This guide explains how STI testing works, what test kits check for and when to seek urgent help. Leeds Pharmacy does not currently supply STI test kits.

How home STI test kits work

A home kit usually involves a urine sample, a self-taken swab or a small finger-prick blood sample. You post the sample to a laboratory and receive the results by text, email or phone. A positive result needs follow-up with a clinician for treatment and advice on telling partners.

When to test

Some infections take time to show up on a test, so testing too soon after sex can give a false negative. Follow the timing guidance that comes with the kit, and test again if advised.

What STI tests usually check for

• Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, usually from a urine sample or swab
• HIV and syphilis, usually from a blood sample
• Other infections, depending on symptoms and clinical assessment

Many STIs cause no symptoms, so testing is worthwhile after a new partner or unprotected sex even if you feel well.

When to get urgent help

A home kit is not a substitute for urgent clinical assessment after sexual assault, or for severe pelvic or testicular pain or other serious symptoms. Call 999 in an emergency or NHS 111 for urgent advice.
